Audrey, Finnell & MacMillan’s Angel

I was asked by the guys at Finnell & MacMillan if I would help out in a competition the salon was running. The aim was to find an ‘Angel’ and then treat them to a day of pampering. Rather than me explaining it all I’ll just copy and paste the post from Finnell & MacMillan’s Facebook page.

‘We have found our F&M Angel!!! The winner is………………………. Audrey Kirk! Audrey was nominated by her co volunteers at RAMH/Causeway services in East Renfrewshire.
Audrey has been involved with the service for about a year now, and in that time she has established herself as an enthusiastic, dedicated fundraiser, and an ardent promoter of mental health awareness. She is also a representative for mental health on the CHCP [Community health and care partnership] and has recently become involved in the Public Experience initiative aimed at gauging public satisfaction with GP services.

Audrey volunteers as a facilitator of Causeway’s Creative Expression group and is a member of the Social Committee, dedicating much of her time to fundraising pursuits including organising and participating in various fundraising events ranging from quizzes and theme nights, to fashions shows and the recent “Jubilee” party held in the Causeway grounds. So congratulations Audrey, you have won:
Cut & Colour
Calgel/Shellac Nails
Facial by Tracey Hall Therapy
Photoshoot with PMcG Photography
Dinner for 2 at Travellers Rest Neilston
and a Paul Mitchell Goodie Bag.’
It was an absolute pleasure to photograph Audrey and she was a clear winner in the competition. Here are a couple of shots of Audrey after her pampering.

Wedding Photography

Seeing as this is almost the start of the wedding season I thought I’d write a short post on choosing your photographer.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve entered a house for a family portrait session and heard complaints about the couple’s wedding photographs. This makes me extremely sad as the photographs, along with the videography, are the only reminders of the day, and they should be very special for the rest of the couple’s married life. Usually a couple choose a photographer through a recommendation or by looking at their work. No matter who you choose for your big day make sure you know their style and have seen recent examples of their work, so you know exactly what you are getting. Also try to meet the photographer so you know what he/she is like. After all, some photographers will spend the entire day with you and will be there during the most personal moments of the day.

To round off all I would say is to take your time in selecting your photographer. There are many excellent wedding photographers in this country, each with their own style. Even if you have been recommended a photographer please take time to check their work out, especially recent weddings. A photographer is just as important as the location, in fact I would say more important, but I’m just being biased ;)

Good luck :)

Ken’s Retirement Party

This shoot was to capture Ken’s retirement party from the railway. It had been organised by his daughter Jill at Fereneze Golf Cluband included quite a few surprises for Ken ;-)

The first surprise was the refurbishing of Ken’s dad’s old bagpipes. Jill had organised for the excellent piper Alasdair Henderson to play the pipes for Ken and also compose Ken a song, entitled ‘The Railwayman’s Rest’. The next surprise was a slideshow of Ken’s family played on the big screen, which was an emotional and touching moment. Then it was time for Ken to enjoy his party and relax with friends and a drink or two.

As well as the excellent buffet there were cupcakes and cake pops provided by the superb Cup Couture. You really have to taste these cakes for yourself, they are a sweet tooth’s dream :-)

Here are a few shots from Ken’s big day.

A new beginning

18 months ago I attended a photography course in London which was to change my life for the better. I would never have thought then that I would be sitting here today writing a blog for my own website. The course was hosted by a rather large Belgian photographer by the name of Bert Stephani. The course was organised by another excellent photographer Callum Winton and his girlfriend Prabha. For two days I met and photographed with other like minded photographers who wanted to learn more about photography from one of Europe’s finest. It was a great experience which opened up a door in my mind which had been closed for many years. Fast forward to today and after over a hundred shoots later I have finally made a very large step in living my dream. Today I have walked away from my secure well paid job to take up photography for a living. I cannot emphasise enough the relief of walking away from a job where you are simply a number.

Through photography I have met so many kind, funny and interesting people and I count myself very lucky to now call a great many of my clients friends. I’m sure there will be many ups and downs on the road ahead but I’m looking forward to that challenge immensely.

Before I sign off I want to thank a few people who have made today possible. First and foremost my wife Louise who has had faith in me since the word go, and who is also my fiercest critic :-) Next I want to thank Bert and Callum for their efforts in London but also in their honest feedback and support since then. And finally to all my clients and friends who have had faith in a wee baldy dude who talks rubbishand occasionally takes the odd half decent photograph. You guys are all responsible for today, and I thank you.

For this blog I thought about which photographs I should upload and I decided I should go back to where I started, so here are a few photographs from my first ever shoot. Meet Poppy and Lilly.
